Reviewing Policy and Proofreading Services

I've been posting middle grade novel reviews on this blog since January 2011. In the beginning, I only reviewed books of my choice, but since I'm getting more requests from writers asking me to review their MG novels, I thought it was time to decide on my reviewing policy.

In addition, I want to offer my proofreading services to writers that are ready to either query or self-publish a middle grade novel. Please read below for more details.  At this time, I only proofread MG novels, but in the future I may expand my services to include blogs and other types of writing.

Reviewing Policy
I offer MG novel reviews in exchange for a print copy or Kindle version of the book.

I give my honest opinion and will only post reviews of a three-star rating or above. Reviews with lower ratings will be e-mailed to the author but not posted on this blog.

As of April 2012, I only review books that have been edited professionally and are error-free.

Current wait time for reviews: 3 months.

Proofreading Services
I offer proofreading services to middle grade authors at a courtesy price.

I've recently read self-published books for review and found numerous errors in them. A published book should be totally error-free, even when self-published.  That's what triggered me to offer this service.

Most professional proofreaders charge at least one cent per word, which means a 40,000-word MG novel would cost a minimum of $400 just for basic proofreading.  That's a lot of money, considering MG novels use simple words and sentence structures that appeal to kids. A good eye for details and a basic knowledge of grammar rules is all it takes. This is exactly what I have to offer.

I will proofread MG novels of up to 40,000 words for $70 and give a complimentary review on my blog if I loved the story.  Not sure about my skills? I will proofread three chapters for $20 first, then the remaining chapters for an extra $50.

For books longer than 40,000 words, add $10 for each additional 10,000 words over 40,000.

If your book needs heavy editing, this service is not for you. I only do basic proofreading for books that are ready for publication, but need a second pair of eyes to make sure they are error-free.

Current wait time for proofreading: 2 weeks.

Credentials
I've been working in an office environment since 1995.  My job experience includes editing letters from foreign employees (heavy editing needed at times), designing brochures, and creating user manuals.  I've also edited speech transcripts for publication.

I'm the moderator of the YA Novel Workshop, for which I've helped writers polish their novels for publication since 2009.

I'm also the editor for UK Children's Publishing.

One of my short stories, Paradoxical Neighbor, has been published by Nelson Education in a book for 10th graders called NELSON LITERACY 10.

Example of my proofreading/editing work:  TRUTH TELLER, by Kurt Chambers (click on the link to sample the first 30%).

Referrals and other examples of my work provided upon request.

Kristen and Jack, don't hesitate to ask if you need anything.

And Kurt, thank you for your support and encouragement. It means a lot to me.

Lots of people don't get the differences between content editing, copyediting, and proofreading, and it's good you're clarifying that. I hope many, many self-publishers whose novels are otherwise ready to go will take advantage of your great prices.
